The AZ road test is structured, predictable, and entirely passable when you've done the work. The trick is understanding what the examiner is actually grading — which is rarely the same as what students worry about.
Before The Road Test Even Starts
You'll arrive at a DriveTest centre with your truck and trailer (we provide both for our students). The examiner will verify your documents, then walk to the vehicle with you. From the moment you touch the truck, you're being evaluated — gear, attitude, and approach all factor in.
Section 1: Pre-Trip Inspection
You'll perform the seven-zone walk-around we cover in MELT, verbalizing what you're checking and why. The examiner is looking for completeness and methodology, not speed. Skipping items or mumbling through them costs more points than taking a few extra minutes.
Section 2: In-Cab Air Brake Test
After the walk-around, you'll perform the full air brake test sequence in the cab while the examiner watches. This includes the governor cut-in and cut-out check, applied leak test, low-air warning, and spring brake activation. Each step has specific procedures and verbal cues you'll need to demonstrate.
Section 3: Yard Maneuvers
- Straight-line backing into a marked stall
- Offset backing — moving the trailer to the left or right while reversing
- Alley dock — backing the trailer 90 degrees into a tight stall
- Coupling and uncoupling the trailer
You're allowed 'pull-ups' (pulling forward to reset your angle), but each one costs points. The fewer you use, the higher you score.
Section 4: On-Road Driving
The on-road segment covers urban streets, highway driving, lane changes, intersection handling, and mirror checks. The examiner will give you turn-by-turn directions. You're being evaluated on lane position, mirror use frequency, signal timing, speed management, following distance, and how you handle other traffic.
After The Test
The examiner will return to the DriveTest centre and review your scoresheet with you, identifying any areas where points were deducted and explaining the result. If you pass, you'll receive a temporary licence document and your full AZ licence in the mail. If you don't pass, you'll know exactly what to work on for your retest — and we offer dedicated re-road test training for that.
